Harvey Milk Blvd. Dedication feat. Tyler Glenn
From Equality Utah:
“It's not my victory, it's yours and yours and yours.” – Harvey Milk
When Harvey won his historic election in 1977 he knew the implications. If a minority could be elected to public office it meant that the system can work for anyone. It would give hope to thousands of LGBTQ youth facing an uncertain future. Harvey would be thrilled to see the achievements of the LGBTQ community in just 40 years and he would be shocked to see what we are doing in Utah.
This Saturday May 14th we are thrilled to be celebrating Harvey’s contribution to our movement with the honorary renaming of 900 S to “Harvey Milk Blvd.” You are cordially invited to take part in our Harvey Milk Celebration and block party from 11am – 3pm this Saturday May 14th. Equality Utah, the Salt Lake City Council, and the Salt Lake City Mayor’s office will officiate the dedication ceremony around 11:30 am, followed by a musical performance from Tyler Glenn.
oin us on 9th and 9th with deejays, street vendors, food trucks, performance artists and more!
The Salt Lake Film Society and Equality Utah will be hosting three screenings of the Academy Award winning film Milk this Friday May 13th at 11pm, Saturday May 14th 11pm and Sunday May 15th at noon. If you haven’t had a chance to see this film, or you have a friend who has not, please treat yourself to seeing Milk again on the big screen.
The work is not yet done. Although we celebrate Harvey’s legacy this Saturday, we must also be mindful that there is a vicious backlash rippling across the country. We hope that seeing Harvey’s name on a prominent Salt Lake City street will send a message of hope and resolve to our entire community. We are here for the long haul. We will never return to the closet. We are here, like Harvey, to change the world for the better.
Your Friend,
Troy Williams
